While researching speakers and
topics on TED.com I came across an important subject that influences my career
field which is A&R and Executive Producing. Music sampling plays an
important part in the process of creating music. Many people do not know it but
a lot of music that we listen to today is sampled by other songs. I like to say
music is similar to history it recycles and repeat it self just like history
does.
Mark Ronson who is a DJ and producer got his appoint across by mixing music with other speakers’ thoughts about sampling music. Ronson displayed his DJ ability and beat producing talent through sampling many songs. This talk given by Ronson is important for music lovers. That is why I choose to select this speaker and topic. I am a music lover I am fascinated with hip-hop and R&B just as much Mark Ronson is fascinated about Djing and producing music.
After watching the interview, the main concern was if sampling is a form of plagiarism and certain music that samples other songs should be filled a lawsuit versus sampling being an aspect that artist used throughout their creativity. Since my work will have a lot to do with sampling other music I personally feel that as long as the artist and the label get proper copyright information for sampling the music then there’s nothing wrong with music sampling. Sampling is the reason why certain artist and songs stay alive.
In hip-hop and R&B sampling is often use. Many artists recreate songs using older songs and instrumentals. For an example Biggie Smalls sampled Mtume’s Juicy Fruit in his own song Juicy. Thanks to Biggie every time you hear Juicy the original
song Juicy Fruit will always come to mind. Biggie kept Juicy Fruit alive. From
there other artist incorporated Biggie’s Juicy in their songs. Artists such as
Tamar Braxton, Jay-Z and J. Cole also sampled Biggie’s Juicy. That is why I say
music is like history it just repeats it self. Music Sampling is an important
part of music according to Mark Ronson. As long as sampling is being done the
right way it will continue to be an important part when creating music forever.
