In today’s music industry many artists are going independent
instead of signing major labor deals. The article, WHAT
INDEPENDENT HIP-HOP ARTISTS NEED TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT MUSIC PUBLISHING
discusses the key factors behind music publishing and help the artists
understand and grasp the meaning of music publish and how it will help your music
career.
This article also discusses copyright, how to earn
royalties, understanding performance rights and organizations.
If you are an
artist who just wants to focus on making music and the creative side of making
music than it is best that you hire a publisher. If you’re an artist who wants
to learn about the business, then a publisher wont be needed. There are
platforms such as TuneCore
That are similar to mainstream publishing and you can
promote and distribute your music independently to whomever you want. As an
independent artist it is best you know the ins and outs of publishing so you
can have all your rights instead of sharing them.
This
article also discusses how important it is to copyright your songs. As an
independent artist you’ll be gaining full credit and control over anything that
you compose or create. It is important to remember that there are two types of
copyrights for composition and recording. In order to receive your royalties a
license has to be provided by the artist or their publisher in exchange for
royalties. Its important that you and your manager follow all the copyright
laws so that in case a lawsuit is filled then you are covered to some extent.
Hi Erika,
ReplyDeleteI love that this post gave insight on how artists can be their own publishers as well as protecting their work by just doing a little research. Most artist think that all they have to do is make music and boom, they're rich. But by learning about publishing and being able to do if for themselves they keep more of their profit from royalties. Copyrighting is also a big factor that artist need to understand even if they do have someone representing them. Especially when its an independent artist. You'd never want all of your hard work to go to waste because you weren't protected.
